Gut reactions to the NFL Draft’s 2nd and 3rd rounds

Our thoughts, analysis, and reactions to each pick of the second day of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Day 2 of the NFL Draft is upon us, which means it’s time for this year’s second tier of prospects to have their moment in Nashville. After an eventful and somewhat baffling first round, Friday’s nights selections should feature plenty of wide receiver talent, an eventual landing zone for presumed first round talents like Drew Lock, Jawaan Taylor, and Byron Murphy, and what we can only assume are six different trades from the New England Patriots.

Here are all the reactions we had for picks that hit the board in rounds two and three. It’s not quite grades, and it’s not a draft tracker — but here are all the selections that got us stirring Friday night.

Round 2

Cardinals select CB Byron Murphy (33rd overall)

Arizona gets high-level player who can provide some insurance should Patrick Peterson eventually get traded. Also, Mike Bibby is his uncle, so don’t be surprised if he shows up absurdly jacked to training camp in some upcoming season. — Christian D’Andrea

Colts select CB Rock Ya-Sin (34th overall)

Indianapolis killed the draft last year, and getting a first round talent in the second could certainly qualify in 2019 as well. Ya-Sin fills a need across from Pierre Desir, and he should be able to slide right into the Colts’ lineup to make an immediate impact.

Jaguars select OT Jawaan Taylor (35th overall)

Over half of the 71 mock drafts we surveyed had the Jaguars taking Jawaan Taylor with the No. 7 pick.

Nobody was really surprised when they passed though, because not many people thought they’d be able to get Josh Allen. But Taylor all the way at No. 35? Woo buddy, that’s some value. — Adam Stites

49ers select WR Deebo Samuel (36th overall)

Jimmy Garoppolo needs all the targets he can get when he makes his glorious return to the lineup in Santa Clara, and Samuel certainly fits that role. But will he be better than A.J. Brown, Parris Campbell, Hakeem Butler, or Terry McLaurin? — Christian D’Andrea

Bills select OL Cody Ford (38th overall)

Uhh, I think the Jaguars did a good thing moving up from this spot and heading off the run on offensive tackles. With Greg Little off the board at 37, it seems like they got the guy they wanted at minimal cost.

Bucs select CB Sean Bunting (39th overall) and Raiders select CB Trayvon Mullen (40th overall)

Ok, literally how is Greedy Williams still on the board this is malpractice. — Richard Johnson

Broncos select OL Dalton Risner (41st overall) and QB Drew Lock (42nd overall)

The Broncos have added an athletic tight end, a rugged offensive linemen, and now have their quarterback of the future — while trading down in the first round. Not a bad draft for them so far. — Charles McDonald

Lions select ILB Jahlani Tavai (43rd overall)

We don’t know who that is. — Christian D’Andrea, Charles McDonald, Adam Stites, and Richard Johnson

Packers select G/C Elgton Jenkins (44th overall)

Green Bay finally gets a player who can help Aaron Rodgers out...but would they have been better off with a wideout here? There was tons of receiving talent still on the board at No. 44, and Jenkins was only the 61st-ranked player on both Dan Kadar and Mel Kiper’s draft boards. — Christian D’Andrea

Patriots select CB JoeJuan Williams (45th overall)

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHYEESSSSSSSSSSSSS— Christian D’Andrea

Browns select CB Greedy Williams (46th overall)

Cleveland didn’t even have a first-round pick and they still landed a player that many people thought was the best in the class at his position. What is this weird alternate universe we’re living in where everything works out amazingly for the Browns? — Adam Stites

Saints select C Erik McCoy (48th overall)

You didn’t actually think the Saints would wait until No. 62 to pick, right? Sean Payton loves to trade up.

Colts select OLB Ben Banogu (49th overall)

Banogu is a freak athlete who can add an additional pass rushing presence on the edge and should be able to make an immediate impact thanks to the pressure Margus Hunt and Denico Autry bring from the middle of the field. A wide receiver would have made sense here, but I can understand Indianapolis shying away from Ole Miss’s wideouts after its Donte Moncrief experience. — Christian D’Andrea

Titans select WR A.J. Brown (51st overall)

Congrats to Marcus Mariota, who now gets to throw the ball to arguably 2019’s top receiving prospect. He’s a dynamic receiver who can play outside or in the slot and will open up the Tennessee offense so Corey Davis and new addition Adam Humphries can feast this fall. If Mariota can’t put together a big year with this receiving corps, it may be time for the Titans to move on.— Christian D’Andrea

Bengals select TE Drew Sample (52nd overall)

Weird, weird, weird.

Eagles select RB Miles Sanders (3rd overall)

Texans select OT Max Scharping (55th overall)

Chiefs select WR Mecole Hardman (56th overall)

Bye bye, Tyreek Hill. — Christian D’Andrea

Eagles select WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (57th overall)

Probably signaling that they don’t intend to extend Nelson Agholor. J.J. might be better anyways. — Charles McDonald

Cowboys select DT Trysten Hill (58th overall)

Dallas needed some more juice on the interior and Hill has the athletic profile of a good three technique. I really like this pick for them. — Charles McDonald

Colts select WR Parris Campbell (59th overall)

Very nice of Indianapolis to support T.Y. Hilton with younger T.Y. Hilton. Campbell is capable of being the No. 2 wideout Andrew Luck’s been waiting for and should add another field-stretching element to a suddenly-potent Colts offense — Christian D’Andrea

Chargers select S Nasir Adderley (60th overall)

Los Angeles started their draft by putting Jerry Tillery in a defensive front that has Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. Now the Chargers put Nasir Adderley in a secondary with Derwin James? This is not going to be an easy team to beat next year. At all. — Adam Stites

Rams select S Taylor Rapp (61st overall)

The Rams added a versatile, dynamic safety in Taylor Rapp. He played a bit of everywhere in Washington’s defense and will do the same for Wade Phillips in the NFL. This is a strong replacement for Lamarcus Joyner, who they lost in free agency to the Raiders. — Charles McDonald

Cardinals select WR Andy Isabella (62nd overall)

This pick originally belonged to the Dolphins, but they received it from Miami in exchange for Josh Rosen. Isabella and Christian Kirk will give Kyler Murray a fantastic young duo to work with as he starts his career. — Charles McDonald

Chiefs select DB Juan Thornhill (63rd overall)

Juan Thornhill is exactly what the Chiefs’ defense needs. He’s a versatile, athletic defensive back that split time between safety and cornerback during his college career. — Charles McDonald

Seahawks select WR D.K. Metcalf (64th overall)

Speed, speed, speed. Seattle added another vertical threat to their offense in Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf. Russell Wilson is going to be dropping bombs down the field to Tyler Lockett and Metcalf. — Charles McDonald

Cardinals select DE Zach Allen (65th overall)

Allen is another strong edge rusher who can buttress Chandler Jones, even if NFL is most interested in telling the world his mom, a former Dolphins cheerleader, was super hot back in the day. — Christian D’Andrea

Steelers select WR Diontae Johnson (66th overall)

Not gonna lie, know next to nothing about this guy. His highlights on TV looked fun! — Charles McDonald

49ers select WR Jalen Hurd (67th overall)

The 49ers added their second wide receiver of the draft in Baylor receiver Jalen Hurd. Hurd was originally a running back at Tennessee, but successfully made the transition to receiver. Now he gets to cash in. — Charles McDonald

Jets select DE/LB Jachai Polite (68th overall)

Polite came into the draft process as a projected top-15 pick, but after he bombed his combine interviews and struggled with a hamstring issue during his workouts, he fell down the draft. If Polite is able to get back into the player he showed at Florida, he’ll form a disruptive duo with Quinnen Williams. — Charles McDonald

Jaguars select TE Josh Oliver (69th overall)

Nice. — Charles McDonald

Rams select RB Darrell Henderson (70th overall)

Another running back to siphon touches from Todd Gurley in the playoffs. Henderson averaged an insane 8.9 yards per carry over each of the last two seasons. — Charles McDonald

Broncos select DT Dre’Mont Jones (71st overall)

Jones is lucky he even got drafted considering he wore #86 in college. — Charles McDonald

Bengals select LB Jermaine Pratt (72nd overall)

Bears select RB David Montgomery (73rd overall)

This is the perfect replacement for Jordan Howard. Montgomery is a bruising, if a bit slow, running back that should make a nice 1-2 punch with Tarik Cohen. — Charles McDonald

Bills select RB Devin Singletary (74th overall)

Now they can cut LeSean McCoy for spoiling Avengers: Endgame. — Charles McDonald

Packers select TE Jace Sternberger (75th overall)

Aaron Rodgers needed another tight end after the Jimmy Graham experience failed to pan out last fall. They get one of the NCAA’s most impactful players in Sternberger, who averaged more than 17.3 yards per catch and scored 10 touchdowns despite playing with an underwhelming quarterback at Texas A&M last fall. Sternberger plays faster than he looked at the Combine, and he’s smart enough to be the kind of player Rodgers won’t immediately get sick of — Christian D’Andrea

Washington selects WR Terry McLaurin (76th overall)

Washington continues to have one of 2019’s best drafts, uniting first round pick Dwayne Haskins with his rock solid wideout McLaurin. He peaked with Haskins throwing him passes as a senior, averaging 20 yards per catch and scoring 11 touchdowns on 35 receptions. Can’t wait to see how they mess this one up. — Christian D’Andrea

Patriots select EDGE Chase Winovich (77th overall)

Good on the Pats to honor the memory of Shawn Crable.— Christian D’Andrea

Dolphins select OG Michael Dieter (78th overall)

Miami badly needed blockers, and Dieter could be a building block next to Laremy Tunsil. Most Wisconsin offensive linemen are. — Christian D’Andrea

Browns select LB Sione Takitaki (80th overall)

Takitaki spent the last two years of his college career answering questions about his maturity and whether or not he can play linebacker in the NFL. Spoiler: he can.— Christian D’Andrea

Titans select C/G Nate Davis (82nd overall)

NFL Network would like us to know he has a unique “frog stance” and that he attended the Senior Bowl. This is the scouting report you get when you draft a player from a program that didn’t exist before 2013. — Christian D’Andrea

Chiefs select DT Khalen Saunders (84th overall)

Saunders showed out at Senior Bowl practices with outstanding strength and ballerina-like balance. Plus he can do a backflip at 324 pounds.

Ravens select DL Jaylen Ferguson (85th overall)

Baltimore needed to boost its pass rush after losing players like Za’darius Smith and Terrell Suggs in free agency. They went out and got the FBS’s all-time sack leader with the 85th pick of the draft. Yeah, that’ll do. — Christian D’Andrea

Patriots select RB Damien Harris (87th overall)

Wither the Rex Burkhead era? Harris averaged 6.4 yards per carry in college and just made Sony Michel significantly less valuable in your dynasty fantasy league. — Christian D’Andrea

Seahawks select LB Cody Barton (88th overall)

Never heard of this guy before. Let’s take this time to watch the Seahawks calling D.K. Metcalf. — Charles McDonald

Colts select LB Bobby Okereke (89th overall)

Not sure who this guy is either, but Pat McAfee was fun. — Charles McDonald

Cowboys select C/G Connor McGovern (90th overall)

Dallas opted to add more beef to their offensive line with Penn State guard Connor McGovern. He’s a talented interior guy who might be able to see the field this year. — Charles McDonald

Chargers select OT Trey Pipkins (91st overall)

The NFL Network broadcast showed that he only allowed two sacks in 43 games. That’s pretty good! — Charles McDonald

Jets select OT Chuma Edoga (92nd overall)

Fat boys. — Charles McDonald

Ravens select WR Miles Boykin (93rd overall)

The Ravens added their second receiver in Miles Boykin, giving Lamar Jackson some much needed help. — Charles McDonald

Buccaneers select DB Jamel Dean (94th overall)

Perfect fit for Todd Bowles’ scheme. He’s a tough, aggressive, FAST corner that excels in man coverage. — Charles McDonald

Giants select DE/LB Oshane Ximines (95th overall)

David Gettleman gets the pass rusher the Giants’ defense needed. Hopefully. — Charles McDonald

Bills select TE Dawson Knox (96th overall)

The Bills continue to add playmakers for Josh Allen. Knox and Tyler Kroft are a solid tight end duo. — Charles McDonald

Rams select OT Bobby Evans (97th overall)
